Designing Your Dream Home: What Is a Project Manager and Why Do I Need One?

Amy here from Sunday Homes, and I should start by saying that a project manager can be different based on who you are engaging, and what type of build project you are undertaking.  For the purpose of this post I’m referring to a project manager in relation to our offering here at Sunday Homes.

A project manager is someone that acts as your advocate throughout the design and build journey.  They intimately understand your end goal and champion for this from the outset.  They always have your best interests at heart and work to pull all the pieces of the project puzzle together in the right sequence.

While a project manager may seem like a luxury that only some can afford, a good project manager will save you ten fold on your investment.

What Does A Project Manager Do?

  • Day to day they will undertake tasks such as managing communication with your build team and third party consultants, procuring and scheduling deliveries to site and overseeing the project schedule.

  • They act as the key point of contact for the multiple questions that need to be answered and trouble shoot any problems that arise.

  • Trouble shoots problems and manages the schedule like a pro.

  • Has the potential to save you a whole lot of time, money and stress.

There’s a saying that goes ‘you don’t get paid for the hour, you get paid for the experience you bring to the hour’. By engaging an independent advocate (aka an experienced project manager) in your corner you’re on the right path to project success.

My final word on the subject - and if you take away nothing else please take away this - your builder is NOT your project manager.  Good builders are amazing human beings (I’m married to one) but it’s not their job to manage your build.  They are running a business with their own vested interest, if you’re not engaging the services of a professional to captain the ship then you need to be prepared to captain it yourself.

We founded Sunday Homes over 10 years ago, and in that time we’ve seen it all. We’re lucky to have established amazing relationships and have tried and tested the best (and worst) in the industry.  We’ve learned, and learned some more.

We know that your project has the potential to be a huge success, and if you’d like to find out if we’re the right fit to bring your dream home to life, reach out via the button below.
